3D Printing will create many career opportunities

Career Insight and Training

If you've been following the developments of 3D printing and how it could shape the future economy, you've perhaps pondered what future jobs 3D printing could provide. With 3D printing already starting to change how manufacturing works around the world, the potential for all-new jobs as a result of the technology already looks bright. While manufacturing might shift dramatically in the job sector, other jobs will pop up that fill in the gaps and ultimately provide more interesting possibilities.

As 3D printing becomes more ubiquitous in homes and businesses, expect these job opportunities to open up in the next few years.

3D Designers and Modeling

While some people may see only the home-based side of 3D printers, those designed for industry still need good designers to make things. This can be an overly technical field, and 3D designing or modeling will likely be a popular career choice and increase in many different colleges.

On the 3D modeling side, it's computer-aided design that can help in shaping custom products for businesses and various industries. Business News Daily points out that CAD 3D modeling will require more extensive 3D printing knowledge as in a product's size, geometry and the materials used.

More Home-Based Businesses

With 3D printers in the home increasing, you can also expect to see a renaissance in the home-based business. Even if many people affected by the downturn in the U.S. economy already had to reinvent themselves, 3D printers can add a new layer. When dealing with products, a home-based business no longer has to worry about space for inventory because a product can be printed immediately. Plus, with 3D printers becoming faster, this can be done within an hour so the product can be shipped out the same day.

Expect entrepreneurship to hit a new high once 3D printers are in every household.

Teachers Teaching 3D Printing Skills

As mentioned above, colleges will likely start increasing 3D printing courses. But even kids in grade school could start learning 3D printing skills early to get ready for the societal integration of the technology. This is going to require teachers who can teach these skills. It opens up new teaching career opportunities in the public, private, or college school sectors.

As these open up, specific skill sets will be required along with the ability to keep up with 3D printing trends. It poses a challenge for these teachers, though one that can ultimately pay well.

Construction Modelers

The age of the architect's blueprint may become obsolete, as hard as that might be to believe. With 3D printing able to print out miniature versions of large structures, an architect may have to work differently in the future when presenting a structural design. This extends to 3D designing and modeling as a necessary part of the architectural process. In the end, a perfect miniature representation of a house or building can be printed and inspected to gain an accurate idea of what the structure will look like.

Lawyers for New Intellectual Property Concerns

Perhaps you'll bristle at the thought of more lawyers being available. Regardless, those interested in IP law have some golden opportunities ahead. Because 3D printing has the potential to create intellectual property issues due to printing scanned items, IP lawyers are going to be needed more than ever. They'll have to sort out the complicated legal issues that are going to arise as a result. Due to these protracted legal complications, it's going to keep them very busy with possibly lengthy litigation.

These are just some examples of how 3D printing is going to change job structure and open up new career possibilities.
